Saroyan Centennial Calendar of Events |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Dear Friends, On behalf of the Armenian Museum in Fresno California, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our website. We invite you to explore with us the life and works of one of Fresno's most illustrious and high-spirited native sons, William Saroyan. This the year that we celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth with the William Saroyan Centennial celebration. It all started in Fresno—Saroyan was born and died in Fresno. In between, he became a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright and respected author of books, short stories, and countless articles. He wrote the Academy Award- winning screenplay for The Human Comedy and later adopted it into a popular novel. He was the first American to win both the Drama Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize in the same year for his play, The Time of Your Life. On the international scene, he rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous of his day, but he always returned to Fresno, the only place he considered home. Now, the William Saroyan Centennial Committee, consisting of dozens of sponsoring organizations throughout this Valley, and beyond, are honoring William Saroyan with a year long tribute to his life’s work and his Armenian heritage. Participating organizations have set events and activities in commemoration of Saroyan. Our year long calendar of events is posted on the William Saroyan Centennial website at www.saroyancentennial.org as well as on this site. To date, over thirty-five (35) organizations that are presenting a wide variety of programs to include theatre, literary, and visual arts, music and lectures. We hope that you can join us in this celebration. With Best Regards, Varoujan Der Simonian Larry Balakian Varoujan Der Simonian Larry Balakian President Chairman Board of Trustees Saroyan Centennial |
